Vanda Orchid
Vanda Orchid
A much-loved flowering plant, the Vanda orchid is prized for its striking, long-lasting blooms and its unique aerial root system. This orchid makes a stunning addition to any collection and thrives with the right care.
Plant Care
Light:
Vandas love bright, indirect sunlight. A location with filtered light or morning sun is ideal. Avoid harsh midday sun to prevent leaf scorch. Aim for leaves to have a bright green colour—dark green means it needs more light, and yellow indicates too much light.
Watering:
Vanda orchids require consistent moisture but should dry out between waterings. To water, submerge the roots in water for 10–15 minutes or mist the aerial roots daily in warmer months. Ensure the roots dry out completely before the next watering to avoid rot. In winter, water less frequently.
Temperature:
18–25°C is ideal for these tropical beauties. Avoid exposing them to temperatures below 12°C. They thrive in warm and humid conditions, so keeping them in a slightly humid environment will make them happy.
Humidity:
Vandas prefers high humidity and aims for around 70–80%. You can use a humidity tray, group plants together, or use a humidifier to create the perfect environment.
Potting:
Vandas grow best in slatted baskets or mounted, allowing their aerial roots to breathe freely. If potted, use a coarse, well-draining mix like large bark or coconut husks. Never use standard houseplant soil, as it will suffocate the roots.
Hot Tips: Feed weekly during the growing season and reduce to every 2–4 weeks in cooler months.
