Polaskia chichipe – Mexican Columnar Cactus
Polaskia chichipe is a striking columnar cactus from central Mexico, valued for its sculptural clusters of upright stems and distinctive blue-green colouring. Over time, it forms multi-stemmed clumps that make a bold architectural statement. In spring and summer, mature plants may produce small yellowish flowers followed by red fruit. A slow grower that thrives on neglect, it’s perfect for bright windowsills or a sunny conservatory.
Plant Care
Light: Cacti need bright light to survive. My rule of thumb is always to let them have a view of the sky. The best bet is a sunny windowsill.
Watering: These plants are drought tolerant. Only water when the soil completely dries out, as overwatering can quickly kill these plants. Cut way back on watering in winter, if at all November-March.
Temperature: Can survive down to 5 °C IF kept dry during cold spells.
Potting: A well-draining mix is ideal for this plant. Our Savvy Succa would be a great fit.
Hot tips: In maturity, Polaskia chichipe can flower with small yellow blooms followed by edible red fruits, though this is rare indoors.
Pet Friendly: NO (spines + not safe if ingested).
