Cold Tolerant Housplants

Dec 10, 2025

Most houseplants originate from balmy tropical regions and love a little heat in our homes. However, some varieties can tolerate cooler conditions. If your home tends to run cold, this blog will help you find the right plants.

Just a heads-up: these resilient plants can handle lower temperatures, but they still dislike soggy soil, especially in the winter months!

1. Pachira Aquatica

A great classic plant, one you can manipulate into multiple shapes! They are moderate growers, growing up to 2 feet a year.

2. Stetsonia coryne (toothpick cactus)

Talk about statements, this cactus is giving all the spines you could ask for. One to make house guests stop to look!

3. Aloe

Another classic plant that you hear and see often. During winter, they don't need much water and can tolerate colder rooms.

4. Schefflera

In line with the Pachira, these are moderate growers (approx 30cm a year) compared to most. An all-rounder, robust plant that will be with you for life.

5. Sansevieria

Similar to aloe, these won't need much water during winter, making them a tough cookie during the colder winter months.

6. Epipremnum Aureum

Everyone has to have one of these within their plant journey. You just can't go wrong with these, as they will surprise you with how much abuse they can tolerate.

7. Zamioculcas zamifolia

Nothing says easy like a ZZ, they are super slow-growing plants which means watering is very far and few in between. Making them also really hardy plants!

8. Epiphyllum anguliger - Fishbone cactus

A fishbone cactus is a classy addition to a plant collection. These plants are very impressive when they reach a larger size. Their natural wavy leaves say it all!

9. Epiphyllum Guatemalense

Another family member of the Epiphyllum family, and similar to the above, these curly and wacky leaves are a great way to add interest to your home!

10. Parodia (Eriocactus) leninghausii - golden barrel cactus

Most cacti, in particular this golden barrel cactus, can survive -4 degree temperatures! So if you do have a cold home, these robust cacti will still thrive - how awesome!
