Microsorum pteropus – Java Fern
A true multitasker of the plant world, Microsorum pteropus (Java Fern) is just as happy in a humid terrarium as it is fully submerged in an aquarium. With its elegant, leathery green fronds and low-maintenance nature, it’s perfect for adding a splash of texture to closed or open terrariums — or as a statement plant in your fish tank. Adaptable, undemanding, and slow-growing, this fern is a dream for beginners and a reliable favourite for plant pros.
Plant Care
Light: Low to medium light is ideal — avoid direct sun to prevent leaf burn.
Watering: In terrariums, keep substrate lightly moist but never soggy. In aquariums, simply anchor to driftwood or rocks and let it draw nutrients from the water.
Temperature: Terrarium: 18–24°C. Aquarium: thrives in 20–28°C water.
Humidity: High humidity keeps fronds lush — closed terrariums or aquarium life provide this naturally.
Potting: In terrariums, plant in our terrarium mix or mossy substrate with good airflow. In aquariums, do not bury the rhizome — secure it above substrate.
Hot Tips: Great for beginners — slow growth means less pruning, and it tolerates a range of water conditions in aquariums. In terrariums, pair with mosses and miniature tropicals for a natural look.
Pet Friendly: Yes — non-toxic to fish and safe in reptile/amphibian enclosures.
