RHS Malvern 'Back to grandma's house' - the classics are so back!

May 1, 2026

Alright me lovers?

Alina here, pre-show and totally not stressing out! But I'm here to showcase some of the plants that plant.studio have sourced for my show, that scream 70's and ones you would have seen your grandparents have in their house.

Why are the classic houseplants so good? Well, they showcase the orignal boom of houseplant love and most of them are hardy plants that you would keep for years!

1. Chlorophytum Orchidastrum

A strong start with a spider plant but this one has a slight twist - these ones are vivid orange! A type of spider plant you may have not seen before but now you have!

2. Alocasia zebrina

These tall elegant plants are a great statement to have in your home and a plant I have had around myself for almost a decade!

3. Philodendron Xanadu

If there is a philodendron I always see in imaged within 'The Houseplant Expert by Dr. D. G. Hessayon' is a xanadu. The seratted leaves are what adds texture to your collection.

4. Homalmena Maggy

A plant I will always stick by as a begginer friendly plant but the leaves just instantly take you to a 70's sunken lounge is the maggy and she is goregous!

5. Adiantum raddianum 'fragrans'

One of my all time favourite ferns is these maidenhair ferns, its delicate foliage bounces effortlessly within the breeze.

6. Begonia masoniana river

I could list a lot of begonias as they were all the rage in the 70's but this one stands out because of it's gorgeous texture and colouration.

7. Zamioculcas zamifolia

The zz plant, a hardy sun of a gun that can tolerate lower light conditions. One that is always suggested for first timers, well because it is great!

8. Schefflera arboricola

How could I not have a schefflera at the show? These plants to me are such a staple within 70's housplant decor and for good reason!

9. Monstera deliciosa 'thai constellation'

The 'swiss cheese plant' is another plant easily identifiable with their classic holes - which I still don't think is known why they do this, and a plant again would be a crime to not show. I went with the thai constellation as this plant was discovered in the 70's and I love this man-made verigation. To me fits the bill and is one of the show pieces of the garden.

10. Cissus rhombifolia

This grape vine ivy is a plant I got for my home almost a year ago and it adds an instant 70's vibe to my living room. They a fast growers and can fill an empty space quickly which is what I love about them!
