Description
Tradescantia zanonia, commonly known as the Giant Silver Inch Plant, is a bold and architectural tropical houseplant known for its large, paddle-shaped leaves striped in shimmering silver and deep green. Unlike its trailing cousins, this upright species creates a strong, sculptural presence, making it perfect as a statement plant for shelves, plant stands, or bright corners. Native to tropical regions of Central and South America, Tradescantia zanonia thrives in bright, indirect light and is fast-growing and easy to care for, making it an excellent choice for both beginners and collectors. While grown primarily for its striking foliage, mature plants may also produce small purple flowers. This plant is not cold hardy and should be kept indoors in the UK year-round.
Light
Bright, indirect light is ideal. It will tolerate a little gentle morning or late afternoon sun, but avoid harsh midday rays which can scorch the leaves. In lower light, growth may slow and colours can fade slightly.
Watering
Water when the top couple of centimetres of soil feel dry. Tradescantias like to dry slightly between waterings but don’t want to sit bone dry for long periods. Always check the soil rather than sticking to a schedule.
Temperature
Happy in normal home temperatures between 18–24°C. Keep away from cold draughts and sudden temperature drops.
Potting
We pot our Tradescantia ‘Zanonia’ in our Sandy Loam, which provides the right balance of drainage and moisture retention. Make sure the pot has drainage holes, as they don’t enjoy sitting in soggy soil.
