Dionaea muscipula ‘Zipp’ – Venus Flytrap ‘Zipp’
Meet Zipp, the speed demon of the carnivorous plant world. Dionaea muscipula ‘Zipp’ is a compact cultivar of the classic Venus Flytrap, named for its lightning-fast trap movement. With bright green jaws tinged deep red on the inside, it’s a flashy little monster that loves a good drama (and the occasional gnat).
Native to the boggy wetlands of the Carolinas, this cultivar brings all the interactive charm of the species, plus a little extra zing. Perfect for flytrap collectors, terrarium geeks, and curious kids alike — Zipp’s compact size and quick reflexes make it both fun and fierce.
Plant Care
Light:
Full sun please! The brighter, the better — a sunny windowsill or outdoor spot in summer will do wonders.
Watering:
Only distilled water or rainwater. Keep the soil moist, never dry, and never soggy. Sensitive to tap water — it’s a diva like that.
Temperature:
Likes 20–30°C during active growth, but cool dormancy in winter (5–10°C) is normal and needed. Growth slows, but don’t panic!
Potting:
No compost or rich soil! A lean, acidic mix is best — our A Sandy Loam works well, but pure sphagnum moss or peat-based carnivorous blends are even better.
Hot Tips:
Dormancy is key: in winter, growth slows and traps may die back — this is normal! Don’t feed it meat, and let it catch its own snacks. High humidity and strong light will keep it snappy and vibrant.
Pet Friendly: Technically yes — but those traps are delicate, so keep curious paws away.
