Description

Sarracenia ‘Fiona’ — Hybrid Pitcher Plant

Sarracenia ‘Fiona’ is a striking hybrid pitcher plant known for its tall, elegant tubes and beautiful colouring. In good light, the pitchers develop rich red veining and flushed tones that make this plant a real standout in a bog planter or sunny garden spot. Like all Sarracenia, the pitchers act as natural insect traps, luring flies and other small bugs inside where they break down and provide nutrients for the plant.

This is a vigorous hybrid that produces fresh pitchers through spring and summer, gradually forming a fuller clump over time. It’s a brilliant choice for anyone looking to add a dramatic carnivorous plant to an outdoor collection.

Light
Full sun is best. The more light it receives, the stronger the colouration and pitcher growth. A bright, sunny patio, balcony, or garden spot works perfectly.

Watering
Keep the soil consistently wet. Sit the pot in a shallow tray of rainwater so it never dries out. Avoid tap water where possible, as the minerals can build up in the soil over time.

Temperature
Very hardy and well suited to the UK climate. Sarracenia benefit from a natural winter dormancy outdoors, where growth slows before returning again in spring.

Potting
Carnivorous plants require nutrient-poor soil. Plant in a carnivorous mix or straight sphagnum moss. Avoid standard compost and never fertilise.

Hot Tips
Allow the pitchers to fill naturally with rainwater — this helps the plant digest insects. In winter, older pitchers may brown back as the plant rests before producing fresh growth the following spring.

Pet Safety
Not considered toxic to pets, though curious nibbling or rough play can damage the pitchers.
