Hydnophytum papuanum – Ant Plant
A little oddball with a very clever design. The Ant Plant has a swollen, sculptural base topped with branching stems and glossy green leaves. That chunky base, known as a caudex, develops internal chambers that shelter ants in the wild.
Naturally growing on trees rather than in the ground, this tropical plant enjoys warmth, bright filtered light and an airy potting mix. A lovely choice for anyone who likes their houseplants a little unusual—and no, you don’t need to supply the ants.
Also known as Hydnophytum moseleyanum.
Care
Light: Bright, indirect light. Gentle morning sunshine is fine, but protect it from strong midday sun.
Watering: Allow the mix to become almost dry before watering thoroughly, then let excess water drain away. Reduce watering in winter. Despite its chunky base, this is a tropical epiphyte, so avoid treating it like a desert cactus.
Temperature: Keep warm, ideally above 16°C, and away from cold draughts.
Potting: Choose a loose, airy mix like our Airy Aroid, with a pot that drains freely. Keep the swollen base above the compost rather than burying it.
Hot tips: It appreciates higher humidity, paired with gentle airflow. Feed lightly during spring and summer, and avoid moving it into an oversized pot.
In the wild, ants receive shelter inside the plant and provide nutrients in return. Your houseplant can grow happily without this arrangement.
