Euphorbia horrida – African Milk Barrel
A striking sculptural plant that looks like a cactus but isn’t one! The Euphorbia horrida, nicknamed the African Milk Barrel, has beautiful ribbed columns of silvery-green flesh edged with spines. Over time it forms clusters that resemble a mini desert landscape — perfect for adding bold texture to shelves or sunny windowsills. Tough, slow-growing, and very low-maintenance, it’s a brilliant choice for anyone who loves unusual statement plants.
Plant Care
Light: Loves bright light and direct sun. A south- or west-facing window is ideal.
Watering: Wait until the soil is arid, then give it a good soak. Think drought and then tropical downpour. In winter months, cut wayyyyy back on the watering, and give it a drink when you notice it starting to pucker.
Temperature: This plant prefers to be warm, so avoid placing it below 10°C or any sudden temperature fluctuations.
Potting: A terracotta pot and succulent mix are ideal for these. Our Savvy Succa mix does the trick for this plant.
Hot tips: The sap from this plant can irritate the skin, so be sure to wear gloves when handling.
