Dischidia nummularia – String of Nickels
A charming and unusual trailing plant, Dischidia nummularia (commonly called String of Nickels) features small, round, coin-shaped leaves along slender trailing stems. Its pale green foliage has a smooth, slightly waxy texture, giving it a soft, minimalist look that’s perfect for hanging planters or high shelves. A close relative of Hoya, it’s epiphytic in nature — meaning it grows on trees in the wild — and thrives on bright light and good airflow indoors.
Plant Care
Light: Bright, indirect light is best. It can handle some gentle morning or late-afternoon sun but avoid harsh midday rays.
Watering: This plant needs very little water, so let it dry out completely between waterings. Less is more for this plant.
Temperature: 12-32C is the ideal range for this plant
Potting: These plants like a chunky mix, similar to their natural habitat. Our Sandy Loam mix is an excellent choice for this species.
Hot tips: These plants are keen on humidity but will fare well in average humidity. Baisically treat this plant like a Hoya and you are good to go!
Pet Friendly: YES(ish) the milky sap can be an irritant and could cause vomiting if ingested.
