Acalypha hispida is an absolute show-off of a houseplant, loved for its long, velvety red tassel-like flowers that hang dramatically from the plant like soft cat tails. Often called the chenille plant or red hot cat’s tail, it brings a lush, tropical feel and makes a brilliant statement in a bright spot indoors. In warm climates, it grows as an evergreen shrub, but in the UK it’s usually best treated as a tender houseplant or conservatory plant
Plant Care Light: Bright light is best. Give it plenty of indirect light, with a little gentle direct sun if possible, to encourage flowering.
Watering: Keep the soil lightly moist during active growth, but do not leave it sitting wet. It will be happiest with regular watering in brighter, warmer conditions.
Temperature: This is a warmth-loving tropical plant and does best in consistently warm indoor temperatures. Keep it away from cold drafts.
Potting: Use a rich but free-draining houseplant mix. Our A Basic Base works well, with a little added drainage if needed to keep things airy without drying too quickly.
Hot tips: The more light and warmth you give this one, the better it will perform. It’s grown mainly for those incredible dangling blooms, so it’s a great choice if you want something unusual and a bit theatrical.
