Description

Alcea rosea: the cottage garden skyscraper. With towering spires of papery blooms in every shade from pastel to punchy, hollyhocks bring drama, charm, and serious pollinator power to summer borders and walls.

Plant Care

Position: full sun in well-drained, fertile soil – best at the back of borders or against a sunny wall

Hardiness: hardy biennial or short-lived perennial in the UK (down to -20°C); deciduous – dies back in winter and returns in spring

Hot Tips: may need staking in windy spots. Deadhead to prolong flowering, and leave some seedheads if you want it to self-seed. Prone to rust – space well and avoid overhead watering. Loved by bees and butterflies!
