Aquilegia: the perfect plant for those who don't take themselves too seriously. It's got long-stalked, ternately divided basal leaves and straight, leafy stems that hold up bell-shaped flowers with colourful sepals and petals, plus spurs, all on stems that branch out.

Position: full sun to part shade, sheltered
Hardiness: hardy in all of UK and northern Europe (-20 to -15)
Hot Tips: regularly deadhead spent blooms to encourage blooming.
