Description

Impatiens mirabilis is a truly unusual and highly sought-after species, known for its swollen, caudex-like base and distinctive growth habit. Unlike typical impatiens, this plant develops a thickened trunk that stores water, giving it a sculptural, almost bonsai-like appearance.

Native to Madagascar, it produces delicate yellow flowers that contrast beautifully with its chunky base and upright stems. This combination of form and rarity makes it especially appealing to collectors and those looking for something a little different from the usual houseplants.

A fascinating plant to grow and display, it brings both texture and curiosity to any collection.

Plant Care

Light: Bright, indirect light. Can tolerate some gentle direct sun.

Watering: Allow soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Do not overwater—caudex stores moisture.

Temperature: Prefers warm conditions. Keep above 15°C and away from cold drafts.

Humidity: Average indoor humidity is fine.

Soil: Very well-draining mix is essential.

Potting: Use a free-draining mix such as The Airy Aroid blended with grit, or A Sandy Loam for extra drainage.

Pet Safe: Yes

Hot Tips: Avoid burying the caudex too deeply—exposing it slightly enhances its sculptural look. Water less in winter when growth slows.
