Magnolia × soulangeana, often called the saucer magnolia, is a true spring showstopper. Before the leaves appear, its bare branches are covered in large goblet-shaped flowers in soft shades of pink, rose, and creamy white. Hot Tips: Magnolias prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil and dislike being moved once established, so choose the planting spot carefully. Mulch annually to retain moisture and protect shallow roots. Late frosts can occasionally damage early flowers, so a sheltered position is ideal.
