Description
A rare and highly collectable form of Melocactus, Melocactus maxonii ‘Inermis’ is the spineless variant of the species — meaning the body stays smooth and sculptural, with little to no visible spination. Like all Melocactus, it eventually forms a bright woolly cephalium (“turk’s cap”) at maturity, giving it its iconic look.
This is not the same as Melocactus broadwayi — just a spineless form of M. maxonii.
Plant Care
Light: Full Sun. Cacti need bright light to survive. My rule of thumb is always to let them have a view of the sky. The best bet is a sunny windowsill.
Watering: In the spring and summer growing season you may water every 7–10 days only once the soil is completely dry, and reduce watering sharply in autumn. Over winter keep the plant almost dry and avoid any waterlogging.
Temperature: 12-25°C is the ideal range. This plant is not keen on being cold so don't let it go down to 10 °C for long periods
Potting: A well-draining mix is ideal for this plant. Our Savvy Succa would be a great fit.
Hot tips: Once the cephalium forms, watering needs drop even more.
Pet Friendly: I mean yes but I dont think your furry friend would be happy with all those spikes!
