Nepenthes 'Bloody Mary' is one of the most popular carnivorous plants thanks to its dramatic deep red pitchers and easy-going nature. Believed to be a hybrid involving Nepenthes ampullaria and Nepenthes ventricosa, it combines the rich colouration and compact growth of its parent species with excellent adaptability to indoor conditions. The glossy green foliage provides the perfect backdrop for its blood-red traps, which are produced freely throughout the growing season. Compact, colourful, and relatively forgiving, 'Bloody Mary' is an ideal introduction to the world of Nepenthes and a favourite among experienced collectors alike.
Plant Care
Light Bright indirect light is ideal. A few hours of gentle morning sun can help encourage deeper pitcher colouration.
Watering Keep the compost consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water with rainwater, distilled water, or reverse osmosis water whenever possible.
Temperature Prefers warm conditions between 20–30°C and should be protected from temperatures below 15°C.
Potting Use a moisture-retentive but airy carnivorous plant mix. Long-fibre sphagnum moss, orchid bark, and perlite work well. Avoid standard potting composts and fertilisers.
Hot Tips High humidity encourages larger and more colourful pitchers. If the plant stops producing pitchers, it often needs more humidity or brighter light. Do not feed meat or fertiliser into the pitchers—your plant will catch what it needs naturally.
Pet Friendly Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, though it's best to discourage pets from chewing the pitchers.
