Description
Nepenthes 'Sam' is a striking tropical pitcher plant prized for its colourful hanging traps and lush jungle foliage. Believed to be a hybrid between Nepenthes veitchii and Nepenthes alata, it combines elegant pitcher shape with vigorous growth and impressive adaptability. Producing pitchers in shades of green, purple, and burgundy, this fast-growing hybrid develops long cascading tendrils that create a dramatic display in hanging baskets and indoor jungle settings. Easy to grow and highly rewarding, it is an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced carnivorous plant enthusiasts.
Plant Care
Light
Bright indirect light. Strong filtered light will encourage the darkest pitcher colouration. Avoid harsh direct midday sun.
Watering
Keep the compost consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water with rainwater, distilled water, or reverse osmosis water whenever possible.
Temperature
Prefers warm conditions between 20–30°C and should be protected from temperatures below 15°C.
Potting
Use a moisture-retentive but airy carnivorous plant mix. Long-fibre sphagnum moss, orchid bark, and perlite work well. Avoid standard potting composts and fertilisers.
Hot Tips
High humidity encourages larger and more colourful pitchers. If the plant stops producing pitchers, it often needs more humidity or brighter light. Do not feed meat or fertiliser into the pitchers—your plant will catch what it needs naturally.
Pet Friendly
Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, though it's best to discourage pets from chewing the pitchers.
