Product details

Organic Kale Seeds ‘Nero di Toscana’ (Brassica oleracea var. palmifolia) by River Cottage produce a striking and highly nutritious leafy green, also known as Black Kale or Cavolo Nero. With its long, dark, crinkled leaves and rich, earthy flavour, this Italian heirloom is a staple for hearty winter dishes. Exceptionally hardy and productive, it’s perfect for UK kitchen gardens, raised beds, and containers, providing fresh harvests through the colder months.

Plant Care
Position: Full sun to partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil

Hardiness: Hardy annual in the UK – extremely cold-tolerant and can withstand frost, often improving in flavour after colder weather

Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, especially while establishing. Once mature, kale is relatively low-maintenance but benefits from regular watering during dry spells

Sowing: Sow indoors March to May or directly outdoors April to July. Transplant seedlings once large enough to handle, spacing well to allow for full growth

Harvesting: Pick leaves from the bottom upwards from autumn through winter, allowing the plant to continue producing

Hot Tips: Frost enhances the flavour, making leaves sweeter and more tender. Regular harvesting encourages ongoing growth. Ideal for soups, stews, and roasting—this variety is both ornamental and edible, adding structure to veg beds.

Pet Friendly: Yes
