A lightweight volcanic mineral that makes potting mixes airier, freer-draining and much kinder to plant roots. Perlite creates little pockets of space throughout the soil, helping excess water move through more easily and keeping dense mixes from becoming compacted.

It’s one of the easiest ways to tweak a shop-bought compost or build your own custom soil blend. Add more for plants that like to dry out quickly, or use a smaller amount to give an everyday mix a little extra airflow.

How to use: Mix into your chosen potting soil. Start with around 1 part perlite to 3–4 parts soil, then adjust depending on the plant and how free-draining you’d like the mix to be.

Perfect for: Aroids, succulents, cacti, houseplants prone to overwatering, propagation and DIY soil mixes.
