Description
Sarracenia purpurea ssp. venosa — Purple Pitcher Plant
Sarracenia purpurea ssp. venosa, often called the Purple Pitcher Plant, is one of the hardiest and most fascinating carnivorous plants you can grow. Native to North America, it forms low rosettes of chunky purple-green pitchers that fill with rainwater. Insects are lured inside, where they eventually break down and provide nutrients for the plant.
Unlike the tall trumpet-shaped Sarracenia species, this one stays compact and spreads slowly over time, forming a lovely clump. The pitchers often develop rich red tones in bright light, making it as ornamental as it is unusual.
Light
Full sun is best. Outdoors in a sunny spot is ideal, though a very bright windowsill can also work. The more light it receives, the deeper the colouration of the pitchers.
Watering
As a bog plant, it likes consistently wet soil. Sit the pot in a shallow tray of rainwater or distilled water and keep the soil moist at all times. Avoid tap water where possible, as minerals can build up in the soil.
Temperature
Very hardy and tolerant of cold temperatures. It’s well suited to outdoor bog planters and can handle UK winters if kept wet.
Potting
Carnivorous plants need nutrient-poor soil. Use a carnivorous mix or a plain sphagnum moss. Avoid standard houseplant compost and never fertilise.
Hot Tips
If grown outdoors, the pitchers will naturally fill with rainwater — which helps the plant digest its prey. Don’t empty them! This species also produces beautiful nodding burgundy flowers in spring when mature.
Pet Safety
Not considered toxic to pets, but the pitchers can be easily damaged if played with or chewed.
