Scabiosa 'Butterfly Blue'

Scabiosa 'Butterfly Blue' is one of those plants that earns its place in almost every garden. This compact hardy perennial produces masses of soft lavender-blue pincushion flowers from late spring right through to autumn, providing months of colour with very little fuss. It's a magnet for bees and butterflies, making it a brilliant addition to wildlife-friendly gardens, cottage borders, gravel gardens and containers.

Its neat, mound-forming habit makes it easy to tuck into borders, while regular deadheading keeps the flowers coming for months on end.

Plant Care

Light: Full sun is best for the longest flowering season and strongest growth. It will tolerate light shade but blooms more heavily in a sunny spot.

Watering: Water regularly while establishing. Once settled, it's fairly drought tolerant and only needs watering during prolonged dry spells.

Temperature: Fully hardy in the UK and happy to stay outdoors all year round.

Soil: Prefers well-draining soil. It dislikes sitting in wet ground over winter, so avoid heavy waterlogged areas.

Hot tips: Deadhead spent flowers regularly to encourage even more blooms throughout the season. Leave the final flowers in autumn if you'd like to provide seed for birds.
