About this plant

Drosera capensis, commonly known as the Cape Sundew, is one of the easiest and most rewarding carnivorous plants to grow. Native to South Africa, it produces elegant strap-like leaves covered in sparkling sticky tentacles that trap and digest small insects. When sunlight catches the glistening droplets, the plant appears covered in dew, giving rise to its common name. Easy-going, fast-growing, and often producing delicate pink flowers throughout the year, the Cape Sundew is an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced carnivorous plant enthusiasts.

Plant Care

Light: Bright light to full sun. A sunny windowsill is ideal and will encourage strong growth and vibrant dew production.

Watering
Keep the compost consistently moist at all times. Stand the pot in a shallow tray of rainwater, distilled water, or reverse osmosis water. Never allow the compost to dry out.

Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 10–30°C and adapts well to typical household conditions.

Potting
Use a carnivorous plant compost such as sphagnum peat-free carnivorous mix or long-fibre sphagnum moss. Avoid fertilisers and standard houseplant composts.

Hot Tips
One of the easiest carnivorous plants to grow. If the sticky droplets disappear, the plant usually needs more light, moisture, or humidity. Mature plants often self-seed readily, creating a colony of sundews over time.

Pet Friendly
Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs.
