Euphorbia abyssinica, often called the Desert Candle Cactus or Abyssinian Euphorbia, is a striking, tree-like succulent with tall, upright, columnar stems and prominent ridges lined with small spines. Its architectural form and rich green colour make it a statement plant indoors or out (in warmer climates). Despite its cactus-like appearance, it’s actually a succulent in the Euphorbia family, storing water in its stems to survive long dry spells.
Plant Care
Light: Thrives in bright, direct sunlight. Will tolerate bright indirect light indoors but may grow slower.
Watering: Let the soil dry out fully between waterings. Water sparingly in winter. Overwatering can cause rot.
Temperature: Prefers 18–26°C but can handle short dips to 10°C if dry. Not frost tolerant.
Potting: Best in our Savvy Succa mix or a gritty cactus/succulent blend for fast drainage.
Hot tips: Wear gloves when handling – like all Euphorbias, it produces a milky sap that can irritate skin. Can reach impressive heights over time, so give it space to grow.
Pet Friendly: No – toxic if ingested, and sap is irritating. 🚫🐾
