Description
Hylocereus undatus, commonly known as Dragon Fruit Cactus, is a fast-growing climbing cactus prized for its dramatic stems, spectacular night-blooming flowers, and exotic edible fruit. Native to Central and South America, this unusual cactus produces long, segmented green stems that can be trained up supports or allowed to trail from hanging planters. While fruit production is uncommon indoors in the UK, it remains a fascinating and easy-to-grow houseplant with a striking architectural appearance.
Plant Care
Light
Bright indirect light to several hours of direct sun. A sunny windowsill is ideal.
Watering
Allow the soil to dry between waterings. Water more frequently during active growth and reduce watering during winter.
Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 18–30°C. Protect from frost and prolonged temperatures below 10°C.
Potting
Use a very free-draining mix. At Plant Studio, Savvy Succa is ideal for maintaining healthy roots while preventing excess moisture retention.
Hot Tips
Provide a moss pole, trellis, or support if you'd like the plant to climb. Mature plants can produce enormous fragrant flowers that bloom for a single night. Dragon fruit production requires a mature plant, plenty of light, and often hand pollination when grown indoors.
Pet Friendly
Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs.
