Strobilanthes dyerianus- Persian Shield

Strobilanthes dyerianus, commonly known as Persian Shield, is one of the most striking foliage houseplants you can grow. Its large, shimmering leaves display an incredible mix of metallic purple, deep green, and silver iridescence that almost looks painted on. In bright conditions the foliage glows with a rich, jewel-like sheen, making Persian Shield a dramatic statement plant for shelves, plant stands, or mixed tropical displays.

Native to Myanmar, Persian Shield loves warmth and humidity and rewards the right conditions with lush, fast-growing foliage. While it can produce small flowers outdoors in warm climates, it is grown indoors almost entirely for its spectacular metallic leaves.

Plant Care
Light:
Bright indirect light is ideal. Can tolerate some gentle morning sun but avoid strong midday sun which may scorch the leaves.

Watering:
Keep soil lightly and consistently moist but never soggy. Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Persian Shield enjoys humidity and may develop crispy edges if kept too dry.

Temperature:
Happy in 18–24°C. Keep away from cold draughts and definitely above 15°C.

Potting:
Persian Shield prefers a moisture-retentive but well-draining mix. Our Thirst Trap mix works beautifully for this plant.

Hot tips:
Pinching back the growing tips helps encourage bushier growth and prevents plants becoming too leggy. Grouping it with other plants or placing it in a humid room like a bathroom can help keep the foliage looking lush and vibrant.
