Tradescantia spathacea, commonly known as Moses in the Cradle or Oyster Plant, is a striking tropical houseplant with bold, sword-shaped leaves in deep green with rich purple undersides. The compact rosette growth habit gives it a sculptural look, while the unusual boat-shaped bracts occasionally reveal tiny white flowers tucked inside – the feature that inspired its common name. Also sold as Tradescantia ‘Sitara’, this colourful plant brings strong contrast and texture to indoor plant collections.
Plant Care
Light: Bright indirect light, can tolerate lower light but won't grow as well or give you as many lovely colours.
Watering: Water when the top inch of the soil is dry. This plant likes to be moist but don't overwater.
Temperature: 18-22°C is ideal but it can tolerate down to 13°C
Potting: A well-draining and moisture-retaining mix is best. The Thirst Trap mix is a good fit.
Hot tips: Tradescantia is an easily propagated plant, which is great as they only have about a year life span, so be sure to take cuttings and your plant will live on forever!
