Description
An eye-catching and easy-care houseplant, Pedilanthus tithymaloides is prized for its distinctive zig-zag stems and lush green foliage, often edged with creamy white or flushed with pink in bright light. Native to tropical regions of the Americas, this architectural succulent brings a bold, modern look to any indoor plant collection. Its unusual growth habit makes it a fantastic statement piece, whether displayed on a shelf or as part of a larger plant display.
Light
Bright indirect light is ideal, though it will happily tolerate a few hours of gentle morning or late afternoon sun. Brighter conditions encourage stronger growth and can enhance the pink colouring along the leaf margins. Avoid prolonged harsh midday sun.
Watering
Allow the soil to dry out between waterings. As a succulent shrub, Pedilanthus stores moisture in its stems and is much happier slightly dry than consistently wet. Reduce watering during the cooler months when growth naturally slows.
Temperature
Thrives in average indoor temperatures between 18–26°C. Protect from cold draughts and avoid temperatures below 12°C for prolonged periods.
Potting
Plant in a free-draining cactus or succulent mix with added perlite for excellent drainage; our Savvy Succa or Sandy Loam works great. Always use a pot with drainage holes to prevent excess moisture around the roots. Repot every couple of years or when the plant becomes rootbound.
Hot Tips
Rotate your plant occasionally to encourage even growth. If stems become too tall, they can be pruned to maintain a bushier shape, and healthy cuttings root easily to create new plants. Take care when handling, as the milky sap may cause skin irritation and is toxic if ingested by people or pets.
