Description

Philodendron squamiferum, commonly known as the Red Bristle Philodendron, is a truly distinctive climbing houseplant prized for its deeply lobed leaves and unusual fuzzy red petioles. Native to the tropical rainforests of South America, this striking aroid develops increasingly dramatic foliage as it matures, making it a favourite among collectors. Given support to climb, such as a moss pole, it can produce impressively sized leaves that create a lush, jungle-inspired display. Despite its exotic appearance, Philodendron squamiferum is relatively easy to care for, making it a rewarding choice for both adventurous beginners and experienced plant enthusiasts.

Plant Care

Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. It can tolerate lower light levels, but growth may slow and the foliage may become less impressive over time. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.

Watering: Water when the top inch of compost feels dry to the touch. Philodendrons prefer to dry slightly between waterings, and underwatering is generally better tolerated than consistently soggy soil.

Temperature: Prefers temperatures between 18–27°C and should be protected from cold draughts. Avoid prolonged exposure to temperatures below 15°C.

Potting: A well-draining, nutrient-rich potting mix will encourage healthy roots and vigorous growth. Our Airy Aroid mix is a perfect fit for this climbing beauty.

Hot Tips: Provide a moss pole or other climbing support to encourage larger, more mature foliage. Higher humidity will help this plant thrive, although it adapts well to average household conditions. Wipe the leaves occasionally to remove dust and allow them to photosynthesise efficiently.
