Description

Nepenthes × ventrata is one of the most popular and easy-to-grow carnivorous plants available. A natural-looking hybrid between Nepenthes ventricosa and Nepenthes alata, it produces elegant tubular pitchers in shades of green, red, and burgundy that hang from long tendrils amongst lush tropical foliage. Vigorous, adaptable, and forgiving of typical household conditions, it is often recommended as the perfect first Nepenthes for beginners while still being a favourite among experienced collectors. As the plant matures, it develops a beautiful climbing habit and can produce pitchers throughout the year.

Plant Care

Light
Bright indirect light is ideal. A few hours of gentle morning or evening sun can help encourage colourful pitchers.

 Watering
Keep the compost consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water with rainwater, distilled water, or reverse osmosis water whenever possible.

Temperature
Prefers warm conditions between 20–30°C and should be protected from temperatures below 15°C.

Potting
Use a moisture-retentive but airy carnivorous plant mix. Long-fibre sphagnum moss, orchid bark, and perlite work well. Avoid standard potting composts and fertilisers.

Hot Tips
High humidity encourages larger and more colourful pitchers. If the plant stops producing pitchers, it often needs more humidity or brighter light. Do not feed meat or fertiliser into the pitchers—your plant will catch what it needs naturally.

Pet Friendly
Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, though it's best to discourage pets from chewing the pitchers.
